rFONLINE: One Chip To Rule Them All | "A strange alien energy field has started to strike Novus approximately 3 days ago. This unknown energy field has caused erratic behavior on all racial control chips. Thus, the control chips have been giving off strange energy waves that mutate anything nearby that is made out of Halostone. New Era set to launch RP office | as posted by Joey Alarilla at Hackenslash.net
SINGAPORE-BASED New Era Group of Companies, the biggest distributor of games and gaming peripherals in Southeast Asia with an estimated 70 percent market share in the region, has unveiled plans to set up its Philippine office. "We are targeting to have our operations set up in Makati City by May," Alan Teo, group managing director of New Era (www.neweraonline.com), told hackenslash via e-mail.
New Era is the biggest distributor of games and gaming peripherals in Southeast Asia. The company is the regional distributor of Activision, THQ, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Sega and a host of other game publishers. On the peripherals front, New Era carries gaming accessories from Saitek, CH Products and Gamemon.
New Era will bring in games for practically every platform, including PC, Macintosh, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360.
"We also plan to launch premium game pads, joysticks, racing wheels, gaming mice, gaming keyboards and other cool gaming gadgets," Teo added.
The company is already set to make a big splash in the Philippine market this June with the launch of videogame titles based on Disney/Pixar’s "Cars," coinciding with the showing of this highly anticipated animated film.
"In conjunction with the movie release, the Disney Cars game will be released across different platforms (PC/Mac, Xbox, PSP, GBA, NDS and PS2). We’ve been talking to major local synergy partners such as McDonald’s and Fun Characters Inc. (a Walt Disney Co. licensee in the Philippines) to create cross-promotional activities for ‘Cars.’ Soon, consumers will be seeing our gaming products at road shows and events carried out by these partners," Teo said.
Why did New Era decide to open a Philippine office, in spite of the challenges posed by the prevalence of bootleg PC and console games?
"The Philippines offers key opportunities in the computer gaming industry. With a fast-growing economy and gaming-friendly demographics, the Philippines is positioned as one of the major gaming markets in Southeast Asia," Teo said. "New Era has offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia and establishing an office in the Philippines is seen as a natural progression."
Teo said the company aims to make more gamers aware of the advantages of buying original titles.
"We are working closely with local retailers, channel partners, media, synergy partners, schools and government authorities to educate the public on the advantages of buying original games such as, for instance, providing CD keys for online multiplayer support for certain multiplayer games. Also, we plan to conduct gaming events and tournaments to give incentives to gamers and reward them for buying the original product," he said.
New Era has tapped leading Philippine retailers such as DataBlitz and PowerMacCenter in order to make its games easily accessible to Filipino consumers. In addition, the company is in talks with local resellers for its gaming peripherals.
The good news for Mac lovers is that New Era is also aggressively pushing Mac gaming. In fact, the company participated in the Macintosh "Free to Play -- Call of Duty" road show last March in Makati City’s Glorietta Mall, and plans to hold similar events in the future. New Era distributes titles for the Mac platform, including Mac versions of games from Electronic Arts such as The Sims 2, in partnership with publisher Aspyr.

Microsoft to Sponsor WCG Global Events |
The World Cyber Games, the premier competition for the interactive video game industry, today announced that Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Games for Windows will sponsor the global tournament through 2008, providing hardware, software, and marketing support for the events.
Microsoft's sponsorship will encompass all WCG events including three pan-regional championships, the Korean Championship, the USA Championship and the Grand Finals in Monza, Italy (October 18-22). International Cyber Marketing, Inc. (ICM) has designated Microsoft as the premier sponsor of the WCG.
Under the terms of the alliance, Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 will be the exclusive gaming platforms for the PC and console. Microsoft will provide games, consoles, Xbox Live online game service, and peripheral equipment for all WCG events. Microsoft will also supply players with state-of-the-art consoles at WCG events.
'We are very happy to announce Microsoft's status as a premier sponsor of the WCG for the next three years,' said Hank Jeong, CEO of International Cyber Marketing. 'Microsoft's support for the WCG further validates the growing global popularity of e-Sports. Having Microsoft as a partner reinforces the WCG's position as a pioneer of competitive gaming and as the premier event in global e-Sports.'
'Over the years, we have admired the incredible growth of cybersports and WCG's role in expanding the reach of these worldwide tournaments,' said Peter Moore, corporate vice president, Interactive Entertainment and Devices Division, Microsoft. 'Because of WCG's history as a truly global gaming competition, it was a logical choice to team up with them and extend the reach of these events even further.'
The 2006 WCG Grand Final will be held from October 18-22 in Monza, Italy, a city famous for its Formula 1 racing tradition. National Championships featuring online and offline preliminaries are scheduled to start in April and will be held in participating countries.
